Manitoba Intergovernmental Affairs and International Relations provides strategic advice, analysis, and support to the premier and cabinet ministers on matters of intergovernmental and international significance to our province. This includes Manitoba's relationships with the federal government, and other provincial and territorial governments; international relations, activities, and interests; and international and domestic trade policy and agreements.
The department directly supports the premier's role in First Ministers' meetings, Council of the Federation meetings, the Western Premiers' Conference, bilateral meetings with the prime minister, federal ministers, other premiers, as well as meetings with international representatives. The department also supports other provincial cabinet members in a range of intergovernmental meetings and activities, including policy development and agreement negotiations, federal/provincial/territorial meetings, and incoming and outgoing international missions.
Intergovernmental Affairs and International Relations works closely with all departments on issues involving other governments to provide advice and support to advance Manitoba's domestic and international priorities. The department's work supports a strategic, whole-of-government approach that drives results and effectively advances provincial interests.
The department is also responsible for managing Manitoba's internal and international trade agreements and negotiations. This includes working to improve Manitoba companies' access to markets by advancing provincial interests in free trade negotiations and domestic and international trade disputes.
